As a retired MPSB detective I am certain people will find this book very interesting,  I certainly did.

When I saw the adverts for this book as a retired MPSB detective I was not too enthusiastic about a book being written about an organisation that I had served in for most of my service , retiring as a DCI. When I started reading about the selection process it took me back to 1971 when I sat the entrance exam, 10 places available and hundreds of officers hoping to join SB. The general knowledge was as per Carlton's description plus we had to listen to an officer giving out facts and figures about an organisation, note taking was not allowed and we had to write down everything he had said, this was obviously to see if we could attend meetings and report on them by not taking notes and thus standing out in the crowd. I too served on A,B,C,E, P and S squads and his book reminded me of the enjoyable and interesting times I had in the Branch working with great colleagues. The comment about slow promotion was very true as were his comments that brought about the demise of an organisation that came into being in 1883 as the Special Irish Branch. Tenure and senior officers entering the Branch without any SB experience just wanting to stay for a short time, tick the box and move on therefore lacking the loyalty shown by actual SB officers. Well done Carlton, interesting and well written, an enjoyable read. I worked with you on a couple of squads and wish you well in your retirement. Anybody interested in the role of Special Branch should read this book and as a retired MPSB officer I commend it.
